Haitian Children go back to school

Jean Marie

Jean-Marie is 11 years old and wants to go back to school. He sits amongst the rubble of what used to be the National School of Cuba, one of the 90% of the schools in Port-au-Prince that have been partially damaged or destroyed.

All the walls, roofs and blackboards that were torn apart by the earthquake that hit Haiti on 12 January 2010 have also revealed an insufficient and problematic education system.

More than half of school-aged children did not attend school prior to the earthquake. Save the Children is committed to guaranteeing that a child's right to education is ensured even in the most difficult situation.

Our focus, therefore, is not just “getting children back to school” but also to “start them going to school”.
