A powerful earthquake struck central Italy on the morning of 6 April, killing more than 260 people and making thousands homeless.
Some 26 cities and towns were seriously damaged by the quake, and many of the medieval villages surrounding L'Aquila were virtually flattened.
Within hours of the disaster Save the Children Italy had mobilised emergency staff and deployed a rapid assessment team to the site. Children are especially vulnerable during disasters and the agency was concerned about the impact on children of the quake.
As part of our emergency response, Save the Children Italy has established Child friendly Spaces (CFS) in camps in L’Aquila providing a supervised protective environment for children.
