Two-week-old baby Sachi was lying in her bed as the flood waters rose around her. She and a sibling were alone in their small house and the older child did not know what to do.
The water was rising very fast and it almost reached where Sachi was sleeping. Catastrophe was barely averted when an aunt came home early from work, found the children, and took them to a shelter supported by Save the Children in the hard-hit Cainta region of the Philippines.
But baby Sachi was not yet out of harms way. That evening she developed a fever and other signs of sepsis, a serious infection that can kill a newborn baby if not treated immediately. Sachis mother and aunt did not recognize the seriousness of Sachis illness at first, so they did not seek help.
Fortunately, a team of Save the Children medical experts working at the shelter examined Sachi and saw right away the danger she was in. They rushed her to the hospital, where she was treated for her condition, and her life was saved.
