Sophia (23) is nine months pregnant and camping in the open air near Theatre National in Port-au-Prince, where Save the Children has a medical center.
“It could only have been God that made me stand up out of that chair and walk. I was scared but I still wanted to see what was going on. So I went outside into the street and seconds after I walked out the door, our house collapsed behind me. You can’t imagine the shock.
Sophia recalls everyone flooding out of their homes onto the streets. The local community leaders were there, telling them all to get to the nearest park. She got pulled along with the crowd and ended up in the park beside Theatre National.
"When I think about how bad, how crazy my situation is, I can’t stop crying. I want to leave to the countryside, to Jeremie, where my mum is from. My husband’s trying so hard to find work in Port-au-Prince so that we can get there in time for the birth. So far, he hasn’t found anything. I could give birth at any day now."
She saw the doctor today, at the Save the Children medical center in the camp. He gave her some pills for anemia. "I’m going to try to keep things together for my baby. I can feel it kicking, it kicks every day so I know it’s strong. If I were in Jeremie, I would be near my family, and my grandmother, she would take care of me. I pray and hope I will get there. If I don’t reach her, I’ll have to have the baby right here on the ground in the camp."
