The Mobile Playgroup Programme

Training and Capacity Building

Since this is a community run program, a holistic development is entertained.  Mothers groups, youth and the community as a whole are invited to attend various training sessions conducted by our trainers and other stakeholders.  The sustainability of our playcentres is important and therefore, trainings organized along these lines so that our playcentres benefit from them.

MOBILE PLAYGROUP PROJECT 3 (MPP 3)

Background

Save the Children Fiji initially developed the MPP, so children in poor communities could access early childhood education.  MPP began with a truck, converted into a resource centre that went out to squatter communities to run playgroups – hence its name.  This initial approach became sedentary when playgroups were established within low-income communities.  The project integrates community development with educational objectives that support both children and their families and works towards establishing community owned and run kindergartens that are formally recognized by the Ministry of Education.

As the pilot phase of the project drew to an end in 2004 a consultation meeting was held in July 2004 which saw new objectives being developed. This led to the extension of the project and planning for the proposed expansion to other parts of Fiji.

MPP 3 Expansion

The expansion of Mobile Playgroup Project (MPP) Phase 3 being implemented from July 2008 to July 2011 is fully funded by NZAID through Save the Children New Zealand (SCNZ) and is managed by the Save the Children Fiji (SCF).

MPP 3 Program Components

Early Childhood Education

Save the Children Fiji is implementing the Article 28 of the UN Convention on Right of the Child to Education by establishing playgroups in disadvantaged communities.  At present SCF is monitoring 23 centres in the Central, Northern and Western Divisions.

1700 children have gone through this program and 150 would be graduating at the end of this year.

Community Development

Creating awareness on issues affecting children is carried out in conjunction with community leaders and stakeholders.  Therefore, a Community Education Committee (CEC) is elected.  The CEC plays an important role in the everyday running of the ECE centres, identifying resources and needs.
SC Fiji Community Development Officers (CDO) work closely with the CEC in terms of parenting skills, income generating schemes, identifying of training needs, and making referrals to relevant agencies for assistances for long term sustainability of ECE centres.
